- Description
- White or slightly yellow sterile powder.
- Pharmacological Action
- Penicillin is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic that primarily acts on various Gram-positive bacteria and a few Gram-negative cocci. The main sensitive bacteria include Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Corynebacterium, Clostridium tetani, Actinomyces, Bacillus anthracis, and spirochetes. It is not effective against mycobacteria, mycoplasma, chlamydia, rickettsiae, Nocardia, fungi, and viruses.
- Pharmacokinetics
- After intramuscular injection of procaine penicillin, penicillin is released slowly through local hydrolysis, resulting in a longer time to peak concentration and lower blood levels. However, its duration of action is longer than that of penicillin alone. It is only suitable for pathogens that are highly sensitive to penicillin and should not be used for the treatment of severe infections. When procaine penicillin is mixed with sodium (potassium) penicillin for injection, it can rapidly increase blood concentration, combining both long-acting and rapid-acting effects. Large doses of procaine penicillin can cause procaine toxicity.
- Indications
- Primarily used for the treatment of chronic infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to penicillin, such as pyometra, mastitis, and fractures in cattle. It is also used for infections caused by Actinomyces and Leptospira.
- Usage and Dosage
Intramuscular injection. Single dose, per kilogram of body weight:
Horses and cattle: 10,000 - 20,000 units
Sheep, pigs, donkeys, and calves: 20,000 - 30,000 units
Dogs and cats: 30,000 - 40,000 units
Administer once daily for 2 - 3 consecutive days. Reconstitute with an appropriate amount of sterile water to form a suspension before use.
- Adverse Reactions
- The primary adverse reactions are allergic reactions, which can occur in most livestock but at a low incidence rate. Local reactions manifest as edema and pain at the injection site, while systemic reactions present as urticaria and rashes. In severe cases, anaphylactic shock or death may occur. Additionally, gastrointestinal superinfection can be induced in some animals.
- Precautions

This product is only for the treatment of chronic infections caused by bacteria that are highly sensitive to penicillin.

This product is slightly soluble in water and will rapidly lose efficacy in the presence of acids, alkalis, or oxidizing agents. Therefore, the injection solution should be prepared and used immediately.
